Loss

The absence that casts the shadow.

Loss in the memoir is rarely announced. It is inferred — from a space where someone should be standing and is not, from a silence with a specific frequency that a trained reader can identify by shape.

The refusal to dramatise is deliberate. What the book grieves is often the ordinary thing: an afternoon dissolved like sugar in rain, a peach that was simply a peach and asked nothing.
